He was the son of Levi Roberts, a railway goods guard, born 1858 in Deerhurst, Gloucestershire and his wife Fanny M. Roberts (nee Stephens, married Q4 1882 in the Market Bosworth, Leics. district), born 1863 in Desford, Leics. William Henry was born on the 2nd November 1889 in Wigston, Leics., in April 1891 the family home was at Clarkes Road, Wigston Magna, Leics. In March 1901 William was residing in the family home at Cherry Street, Wigston Magna, Leics., together with his parents. In April 1911 William was employed as a hosiery trade winder and was residing in the family home at 7, Clarkes Road, Wigston Magna, Leics., together with his father, now a Midland Railway Company signalman, and his mother. In the 3rd quarter of 1917, William married Margaret E. Chamberlain in the Blaby, Leics., marriage registration district, they resided at 14, Church Nook, Wigston Magna, Leics. William was recorded as an Army Reservist on the 6th December 1915. He enlisted on the 20th June 1917 and embarked to join the British Expeditionary Force in France on the 30th October 1917, joining his unit, the Drake Battalion on the 17th November 1917, and he was attached to the 189th Brigade, Light Trench Mortar Battery on the 15th January 1918 until he was detached from active service on the 18th January 1918 and admitted to the Field Ambulance. He re-joined the 189th Brigade, Light Trench Mortar Battery on the 27th January 1918 and served with this unit until he was gassed on the 14th March 1918 and was admitted to the 11th Stationary Hospital, Rouen where he died at 1.15 in the afternoon of the 16th March 1918
