He was the son of James Elliott Shrubsole, a wholsale clothier’s warehouseman, born 1868 in Dover, Kent and his wife Emma Shrubsole, born 1869 in Chatham, Kent. Arthur Edward was born in q4 1894 in Leicester, he had one sibling, a sister, Mary Ellen, born 1893 in Leicester, in March 1901 the family home was at 4, Uppingham Road, Leicester. In April 1911 Arthur was employed as a clerk and was residing in the family home at 39, Thirlmere Street, Leicester together with his father, a political agent, his mother and sister Ellen, a hosiery trade cutter. Arthur first enlisted into the Leicestershire Regiment, service number 12918, and entered the theatre of war on the 24th July 1915 and he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on the 20th January 1916. His father made application for his son’s medals on the 12th June 1921 giving his address as 50, Ewart Road, Chatham, Kent.
The War Diary entry for the 13th April 1917 records. MAZINGARBE. At 8.30am “A” Company commenced work on track and trench through M.3.b. central (LENS 1/10000). At 7.30pm “B” Company worked on LONDON ROAD and LOOS – HULLUCH ROAD. At 8.00pm “C” Company worked on RAILWAY ALLEY. At 6.00am “D” Company worked with tunnelling Companies. At 4.05pm MAZINGARBE was shelled by the enemy and a shell burst in “B” Company’s Officers Mess killing 2nd Lt. A. E. SHRUBSOLE and wounding Captain C. EVANS. 1 man was wounded and 4 men were sent to hospital with shell shock.
