He was the son of Thomas Challoner an agricultural labourer, born 1863 in Walcote, Leics., and his wife Sarah Ann Challoner (nee Laken) a hosiery trade seamer, born 1862 in Groby, Leics. Frank William was born in 1884 in Groby, Leics., his siblings were, Fanny E., born 1881 in Melton Mowbray, Leics., Joseph Edward, born 1882 in Chelsea, Middx., Thomas H., born 1887 in Groby, Leics., and James A., born 1891 in Ratby, Leics., in April 1891 the family home was at Main Street, Ratby, Leics. In April 1911 Frank was employed as a shoe trade finisher and was residing in the family home at Cropston Road, Anstey, Leics., together with his step father, George Harry Arguile a shoe trade riveter, born 1860 in Anstey, Leics., his mother and brother Joseph and his half blood sibling, Mary Arguile, born 1904 in Anstey, Leics. Frank was born with the surname spelling of Challner, later repeated in official documents, his father Thomas was also registered at birth with the surname spelling of Challner, however the surname is later changed to Challoner.
