He was the son of William Drakeley Hooke (Hook), born 1835 in Anstey, Leicestershire and his wife Ellen Hook (nee Froome, married in the 3rd quarter of 1867 in the Nottingham district), born 1843 in London, Middlesex. Edward was born in the 4th quarter of 1867 in St. Margaret’s, Leicester, he had one sibling, William Henry, born in the 3rd quarter of 1869 in St. Leonard’s Leicester, in April 1871 the family home was at Camden Street, St. Margaret’s, Leicester. In April 1881 Edward was employed as a shoe trade riveter and was residing in the family home at 10, Main Street, Anstey, together with his father, a shoe trade riveter, his mother, a shoe trade webber, and his siblings, William, a shoe trade riveter, Nathaniel John, a schoolboy, born 1872 in St. Margaret’s, Leicester, Thomas, a schoolboy, born 1873 in Newbold Verdon, Leicestershire, Frederick, a schoolboy, born 1875 and Frank, born 1878, the latter two siblings were both born in Sutton Cheney, Leicestershire and Walter Drakeley, born 1881 in Anstey. In April 1891 Edward was absent from the family home at Church Lane, Anstey, residing there was his widowed mother, a char woman and his siblings, Harry, a shoe trade riveter, Nathaniel, a shoe trade riveter, Thomas, a shoe trade riveter, Frederick, a shoe trade riveter, Frank, a shoe trade clicker, Walter, a schoolboy and William Drakeley, a schoolboy, born 1884 in Anstey. In March 1901 Edward was employed as a shoe trade riveter and was residing in the family home at Church Lane, Anstey, together with his wife Susannah Hooke (nee Smith, married on the 9th November 1895 in the Primitive Methodist Chapel, Barrow upon Soar, Leicestershire), born 25th April 1875 in Anstey and their children, Harriett, born 1896, Edward, born 1898 and Rachel, born 1900, all the children were born in Anstey. In April 1911 Edward was employed as a boot trade riveter, and was residing in the family home at Woodgon Road, Anstey, together with his wife Susannah Hooke, a boot trade machinist and their children, Harriet, a boot trade machinist, Edward, a boot trade pressman, Rachel, Hilda, born 1904, Walter, born 1906, Nelly, born 1908 and Nathaniel, born 1910, the latter four children were all born in Anstey. Edward died on the 10th March1919, aged 51 in Anstey and was buried on the 13th March 1919 in Anstey Cemetery. Edward’s father died in April 1900 in Leicester, his mother died in March 1917 in the Barrow upon Soar, Leicestershire district, and his widow died on the 17th February 1950 in Leicester.
Reproduced are a copies of Edward’s Attestation pages for his period of service with the 3rd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment - Militia and also with the 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment together with the accompanying content of additional descriptive service documents, additionally there are some pages for his service with the Royal Defence Corps together with the content of his medical discharge documents, however no Attestation page survives for this third period of military service.
Overall, most of the pages are in reasonable condition, the hand written information relating to his service, in some instances is barely legible, or missing entirely, however the overall description offers a fairly accurate representation of events that took place during his three periods of military service.

Opinion of the Medical Board.
NOTES. – [i] Clear and decisive answers to the following questions are to be carefully filled in by the Board, as in the event of the man being invalided, it is essential that the Commissioners of Chelsea Hospital should be in possession of the most reliable information to enable them to decide upon the man’s claim to pension.
Expressions such as “may,” “might,” “probably,” etc., are to be avoided.
[ii] The rates of pension vary directly according to whether the disability is [a] caused or aggravated by service in the present war. [b] Due to causes not connected with the present war, viz., (1) Previous active service. (20 Climatic diseases in pre-war service. (3) Ordinary military service before the war. It is, therefore, essential when assigning the cause of disability to differentiate between them.

[b] If the present degree of disability is not likely to last 12 months can a further assessment at a reduced rate be made with reasonable confidence to cover a period of 12 months in all? If so, the reduced percentage and the period to which it will be applicable should be indicated in the answer to Question 24a. NA.
