He was the son of John Rushin, a shoe trade riveter, born 1859 in Anstey, Leicestershire and his wife Lucy Rushin (nee Fowler, married in the 3rd quarter of 1877 in the Barrow upon Soar, Leicestershire district), born 1856 in Rothley, Leicestershire. Charles was born in the 3rd quarter of 1878 in Rothley, he had one sibling, a brother Philip Edward Gamble Rushin, born 1881 in Rothley, also residing with the family were Charles’s half blood siblings, Amos Alfred Fowler, a schoolboy, born 1873 and Elizabeth Fowler, a schoolgirl, born 1875, the latter two half blood siblings were both born in Mountsorrel, Leicestershire, in April 1881 the family home was at Church Lane, Anstey. In April 1891 Charles was employed as a shoe finishing apprentice and was residing in the family home at Poplar Terrace, Anstey, together with his father, a shoe trade worker, his mother and siblings, Philip, a shoe finishing apprentice, Jemima, a schoolgirl, born 1883, John, a schoolboy, born 1885, the latter two siblings were both born in Rothley, Nellie, a schoolgirl, born 1887, Lucy Sophia, born 1888 and Lois, born 1890, the latter three siblings were all born in Anstey, and his half blood siblings Amos, a shoe trade finisher and Elizabeth, a shoe trade worker. In the 1st quarter of 1896 in the Barrow upon Soar district, Charles’s mother died aged 39. In March 1901 Charles was absent from the family home at Poplar Terrace, Church Lane, Anstey, residing there was his father a shoe trade riveter, his step mother Priscilla Rushin (nee Smith, married in the 4th quarter of 1896 in the Barrow upon Soar, Leicestershire district), born 1865 in Anstey, and his siblings, Edward, a shoe trade riveter, Jemima, a shoe trade stockroom assistant, John, a shoe trade riveter, Nelly, a shoe trade fitter, Lucy, a shoe trade machinist, Lois, Tom, born 1893, and his half blood siblings, Reuben, born 1896, Polly, born 1898 and Mary Ann, born 1900, the latter four siblings were all born in Anstey, Charles was serving as a Private with the Coldstream Guards and was stationed at Chelsea Barracks, Bridge Road, London. In April 1911 Charles was employed as a shoe trade finisher and was residing in the family home at Wells Yard, Anstey, together with his wife Venus Rushin (nee Harrison, married in the 3rd quarter of 1906 in the Leicester district), born 1884 in Ratby, Leicestershire and their children, Lucy, born 1907 in Ratby, Lena, born 1909 and Elsie, born 1911, the latter two children were both born in Anstey. In the 4th quarter of 1919, Charles’s widow married John Gardner in the Atherstone, Warwickshire district, they resided at Lindley Lodge, Nuneaton, Warwickshire. Charles also served in the South African Campaign. His widow appears to have adopted the surname spelling of Ruskin.
On Saturday February 20th 1915 The Leicester Chronicle and Leicestershire Mercury published the following article under the heading. “LEICESTER SOLDIER’S DEATH AT BETHUNE.” – Mrs. V. Rushin, 38, Christow Street, Leicester, received intimation from the War Office on Wednesday, of the death of her husband, Pte. Chas. Rushin, 3rd Battalion Coldstream Guards, which took place on February 7th in hospital in Bethune from wounds received in action. Pte. Rushin who was a reservist, went through the South African war. He was a native of Anstey, and was 36 years of age.
