On Friday June 8th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “ASFORDBY” – PTE. H. HAZLEWOOD KILLED.- Mr Tom Hazlewood received the sad news on Tuesday that his second son, Pte. Henry Hazlewood, of the Canadian Forces, was killed in action on May 18th. Deceased went out to Canada 13 years last March, and on the outbreak of the war he joined the Canadian contingent. He came to England in May 1916, and then proceeded to France. Towards the end of the year he was wounded, and spent the winter in hospital in England. A few weeks ago he rejoined his regiment at the front. Deceased was 34 years of age, and leaves a widow who resides at Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He belonged to a well known Asfordby family who have carried on business as carpenters and joiners in the village for between 200 and 300 years, and who during the whole of that period have been bell ringers, choir men, and parish clerks. Deceased was also a carpenter and joiner in Canada, and was in the Calgary Cathedral choir.
