He was the son of Thomas Ault a Stonemason, born 1853 in Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire and his wife Mary, born 1857 in Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire. Herbert was a Stonemason and was born in 1882 in Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire, his siblings were Charles, born 1886, Louisa, born 1887, Miriam, born 1889 and Thomas, born 1890, all his siblings were born in Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire. In March 1901 the family home was at 6 & 7, White Horse Yard, Market Street, Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire. Herbert was the husband of the late Sarah Annie Ault.

Mr and Mrs Ault, of Ashby, have been informed that their eldest son, Pte. H. Ault, R.E., has died of wounds received in action in France.
