He was the son of William Canner a bricklayer, born 1861 in Ashby de la Zouch, Leics., and his wife Emma, born 1867 in Odstone, Leics. Charles Edward was born in 1888 in Long Eaton, Derbys., his siblings were, Alice M., born 1883 in Ilkeston, Derbys., Florence Lilian, born 1885 and Joseph William, born 1887, the latter two siblings were both born in Long Eaton, Derbys., Thomas Harold, born 1890 in Ashby de la Zouch, Leics., in April 1891 the family home was at 6, Derby Road, Ashby de la Zouch, Leics. In March 1901 Charles was residing at 19, The Callis, Ashby de la Zouch, Leics., this being the family home of his paternal uncle, James Canner, born 1849 in Ashby de la Zouch, Leics., and his wife Catherine, born 1861 in Moira, Leics., and their son Joseph, born 1883 in Ashby de la Zouch, Leics., also residing in his uncle’s family home were his widowed father and siblings, Joseph, Thomas, Gertrude, born 1893 and Elizabeth, born 1894, the latter two siblings were both born in Ashby de la Zouch, Leics. In April 1911 Charles was employed as a labourer and was residing in the family home at 19, The Callis, Ashby de la Zouch, Leics., together with his widowed father and siblings, Florence, Joseph and Harold.

LOCAL CASUALTIES
Mr William Canner, The Callis, Ashby, has received information of the death in action of his second son, Lance-Corporal C. Canner, K.O.Y.L.I. on March 29th. Deceased was one of the first Ashby men to join Kitchener’s Army, and he served in France for a considerable time. His age was 28. He leaves a widow and one child.
