He was the son of Captain G. A. Maher (North Staffordshire Regt.), and Mrs S. A. Maher of Rawdon Terrace, Ashby de la Zouch, Leics. His enlistment documents record that he gave his father, George Alexander Maher of High Street, Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire, England as his next of kin. He gave his trade or calling as Bank Clerk, and stated that he was unmarried. Information taken from his medical examination shows that he was 5 foot 4 ½ inches in height and had a chest measurement of 34 to 36 inches. His complexion was described as fair with blue eyes and dark brown hair. He gave his religion as Church of England.
