The1881 census shows Elinor Whaley (nee Pigot) aged 22 living in Derbyshire with her husband Charles Herbert Whaley aged 26 who was a student at law at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. A son Herbert Egerton Whaley was born in September 1882. Charles Herbert Whaley died in March 1885 aged 30, their son David Herbert being 5 years of age. In June 1890 Elinor remarried Alfred Edward Jacobson, a daughter Sophia Olave Jacobson was born in 1891, and a son Lyonel Hugh Jacobson was born in September 1894.
David Herbert (the step brother of Lyonel) was shown in the London Gazette of the 13th November 1914 as residing at Ashwell, Oakham, Rutland. The Ashwell church records dated 25th April 1922 show a Christening of David Herbert Whaley the son of Herbert Egerton and Mary Barbara Whaley. The London Gazette of the 19th November 1948 lists Major Herbert Egerton Whaley of Ashwell Lodge, Oakham, Rutland. It has to be assumed that Herbert, Lyonel’s stepbrother had Lyonel’s name commemorated on the Ashwell War Memorial.
Source: Leicestershire War Memorials Project. Herbert Egerton Whaley was the son of Charles Herbert Whaley and Elinor, nee Pigot.
Elinor Whaley, as a widow, married Alfred Jacobson, and had a son, Lionel Hugh Jacobson.
Therefore Herbert Egerton Whaley is half brother, not step brother, to Lionel Hugh Jacobson.
So Lionel Hugh Jacobson is half-uncle to Herbert Egerton Whaley's children, David Herbert Whaley and Charles Peter Whaley.
Charles Peter Whaley died in WW2, age 20.
