He was the son of Harry and Anna Adcock. In 1911 the family home was at Gas Street, Oakham, Rutland, present were his grandmothermother Mary, a widow, born 1842 in Oakham, Rutland. Alfred was a Domestic Gardener, born in 1896 in Leicester, at home there were two uncles, Charles a Shoe Laster, born 1868 and John a Shoe Finisher, born 1872, both uncles were born in Oakham, Rutland. Prior to his enlistment he was a gardener. He joined the Territorial Force on the 30th April, 1913 and was mobilised on the outbreak of war, embarking for France on the 28th February 1915. He fought in the Battle for the Hohenzollern Redoubt on the 18th October 1915, and in the Battle of the Somme in July 1916, together with other engagements, and was killed by a shell at Lens, where he was buried. His Sergeant writing of Alfred’s fate, says:- He died a soldier’s death. He volunteered for the post where it happened, which was one of extreme danger. Always ready for work, never mind what the job was. He was a man it will be very hard to replace. His brother Richard also fell.
