He was the son of George Pratley. He was employed as a groom at Ashwell Hall and immediately on the outbreak of war enlisted in the 1st Royal Buckinghamshire Hussars, embarking with them for Egypt. He fell sick and was left in Cairo while his regiment embarked for Gallipoli, he developed pneumonia from which he subsequently died. Other sources show his place of residence as Shakespeare Cottage, Sandgate, Kent.
