He was the son of William Ball a coal miner, born 1861 in Ibstock, Leics., and his wife Lucy Ann, born 1858 in Ibstock, Leics. Wallford Sydney was born in 1894 in Ibstock, Leics., his siblings were, William, born 1884, George Harry, born 1886, Ethel, born 1888 and Gertrude Lucy, born 1893, all his siblings were born in Ibstock, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Hawthorn Villa, Penniston Road, Ibstock, Leics. In April 1911 Wallford was employed as a colliery labourer and was residing in the family home at New Road Bagworth, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, George and Gertrude.
