ContributeSource: Leicestershire War Memorials Project. The following information was kindly submitted to the project by F Tilley in 2016: "George James Burton was born in 1884 at Agar Nook Whitwick, Coalville, Leicestershire.
He was the son of James Burton, born 1855 at Stanton under Barton, Leicestershire, Quarryman at the Stone Quarry and Naomi Burton born in 1856 at Agar Nook Whitwick, Coalville, Leicestershire.
In 1911, the Census shows that George James lived with his parents and his brother William born 1887 in Agar Nook, Whitwick, a Quarryman at the Stone Quarry of Bardon Hill, Coalville, Leicestershire, George James was 27 at the time, his brother William was 24.
Before the war he was still living with his parents and brother in Bardon Hill and working at the quarry.
George James Burton enlisted with the Army in Coalville, Leicestershire.
All we can say is that George James Burton was killed in action.
It was impossible to find neither George’s registration number nor his Battalion.
Researches with the National Archives at Kew Richmond, and at the National Army Museums showed with the expertise of Dr Peter Johnston the Collections Content Manager, that George James Burton did serve with the Royal Army Veterinary Corps and was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal, meaning that he served overseas. However, it would be difficult to ascertain anymore. Unfortunately about 60% of the soldiers’ Service Records were irretrievably damaged or lost completely as a result of enemy bombing in 1940 during the Second World War, and obviously Private Burton’s records have not survived.
George James Burton is also remembered at Bardon Chapel Memorial, Bardon, Leicestershire George James Burton is also commemorated at the Memorial Cross, St Peter’s Churchyard, Bardon, Leicestershire."

BARDON HILL
EX-SOLDIER’S DEATH FROM INFLUENZA
The death occurred on Monday afternoon at his home, 27, The Crescent, Bardon Hill, of Mr George Burton, late of the Leicestershire Regiment, the result of influenza. He had served in France and was only discharged from hospital in London on the previous Tuesday. Before joining the army, in which he served for three years, he was a quarryman at the Bardon quarries. His father died only a month ago and much sympathy is felt for the widow and relatives in their double bereavement.
