James was born in Coalville and was the son of John Hawes- he had two brothers and three sisters.
He enlisted in Coalville and had served with the 1/5th Northumberland Fusiliers as 5/4916 before joining the 11th Bn under service number 241176.

He was killed in action on the 15th Jume 1918 and was awarded the British War and Victory Medals.
