Source: Leicestershire War Memorials Project. Arnold was born in 1899, in Bardon Hill and was the son of William, an estate woodman labourer (b 1868) and Hannah Thirlby (b 1872).
In 1911 the family were living in Bardon Hill- the children were Agnes (b 1893), Albert (b 1896), Hilda (b 1897), Arnold (b 1899), Wilfred (b 1901), Stenson (b 1903), Elvin (b 1906), William (b 1909) and twins Margaret and Colin (b 1910).
Arnold had worked at Bardon Quarry before enlisting.
