He was the son of William Stanley Cleveland, a Shoe Finisher and his wife Elizabeth Iliffe. Alfred was baptised on the 4th June 1889 at Barrow upon Soar, Leics. He had two siblings, Mabel Maria and Robert Sidney. Alfred died of pneumonia at Newcastle on Tyne.
