He was the son of Henry Marlow, born 1839 in Barrow upon Soar, Leicestershire and his wife Selina Marlow (nee Parker, married in the 4th quarter of 1861 in the Leicester district), born 1842 in Peatling Parva, Leicestershire. George William was born in the 3rd quarter of 1870 in Barrow upon Soar and was baptised there in Holy Trinity Church on the 4th September 1881, his siblings were, Alfred Augustus, born 1863, Mary Jane, born 1864, Ellen Elizabeth, born 1866 and John Henry, born 1868, all his siblings were born in Barrow upon Soar, in April 1871 the family home was at Freestone Square, Barrow upon Soar. In April 1881 George was a schoolboy and was residing in the family home at Freestone Square, Barrow upon Soar, together with his father, a pantaloon framework knitter, his mother, a seamstress and his siblings, Alfred, a pantaloon cutter, Ellen, an elastic web weaver, John, a schoolboy, Herbert Edward, a schoolboy, born 1873 and Arthur Ernest, born 1877, the latter two siblings were both born in Barrow upon Soar. In April 1891 George was absent from the family home at Freestone Square, Barrow upon Soar, residing there was his father, a framework knitter, his mother and siblings, Mary, a hosiery trade worker, Arthur, an errand boy, Rose Emma, a schoolgirl, born 1882, Florence Selina, a schoolgirl, born 1883 and Percy Edwin, a schoolboy, born 1886 the latter three siblings were all born in Barrow upon Soar, also residing with the family was George’s Nephews, Ernest E. Marlow, born 1884 and John Wm. B. Marlow, born 1889, both Nephews were born in Barrow upon Soar. In March 1901 George was absent from the family home at Chapmans Lane, Barrow upon Soar, residing there was his father, a framework knitter, his mother and siblings, Rose, a hosiery trade machinist and Florence, a hosiery trade machinist, also residing in the family home were George’s Nephews, Ernest Marlow, a hosiery trade machinist, and William Marlow. George was the husband of Maud Rosamund Marlow, who he nominated as his sole legatee. George served in the South African Campaign, and he died of nephritis in the Leicester Royal Infirmary.
On Friday June 9th 1916 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL AND DISTRICT NEWS.” – BARROW-ON-SOAR. – MILITARY FUNERAL. The funeral of Quartermaster-Sergeant G. W. Marlow, of the 12th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, took place at the Cemetery on Wednesday week, the Rev. T. Stone officiating. The deceased served 21 years in the 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment. Enlisting in 1886, he in the following year went out to Halifax, from there to Bermuda, and later to South Africa, where he was when the war broke out. He served with his regiment through the campaign, being in several engagements. When peace was declared he finished the remainder of his service in India, where he was married. When the present war broke out he re-enlisted, and was stationed for some time at Glen Parva, where he was well known and highly respected by his comrades. He was finally stationed at Newcastle, but being ill came home on sick leave. He became seriously ill, and died at the Base Hospital, Leicester on Saturday night. The coffin was covered with the Union Jack, and the bearers were men from the Depot. Among those who attended were Captain Edwards, 12th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, Colour-Sergeant’s Gurr, Hodgson, Miller, Quartermaster-Sergeant Berridge, and Sergeant-Majors Cooper, Payne, Cook, and Almey. Three volleys were fired, and buglers sounded the Last Post. There were some magnificent wreaths from the officers of the 12th Battalion, warrant officers, staff and sergeants at the Depot, N.C.O.’s and men of the 12th Battalion, and members of deceased’s family.
