He was the son of Thomas Hames, a lime works labourer, born 1874 in Barrow upon Soar, Leics., and his wife, Charlotte Hames, born 1875 in Mountsorrel, Leics. Thomas was born on the 10th March 1897 in Barrow upon Soar, Leics., his siblings were, Elizabeth, born 1893, in Mountsorrel, Leics., George William, born 1895, Harry, born 1898 and Frank, born 1900, the latter three siblings were all born in Barrow upon Soar, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Sileby Lane, Mountsorrel, Leics. In April 1911 Thomas was an inmate at a Reformatory School in Saltley, Birmingham, Warwks. Thomas was baptised on the 10th March 1897 at Barrow upon Soar, Leics. The family latterly resided at 2, Pinfold Street, Loughborough, Leics. Thomas enlisted on the 26th May 1915 and embarked with a draft for the Drake Battalion, to join the Mediteranean Expeditionary Force on the 16th February 1916, and from the Base Depot at Mudros he was posted to the Anson Battalion, joining it on the 21st March 1916 and serving with it until he was reported missing, later reported killed in action on the 13th November 1916.
