He was the son of Henson Lockwood, a labourer, born 1855 in Barrow upon Soar, Leicestershire and his wife Louisa Lockwood (nee Lockwood, married in the 1st quarter of 1887 in the Barrow upon Soar, Leicestershire district), born 1861 in Barrow upon Soar. George Henson was born in the 1st quarter of 1889 in Barrow upon Soar and was baptised on the 3rd February 1889 at Barrow upon Soar, his siblings were, Mabel, born 1888 and Annie, born 1891, both his siblings were born in Barrow upon Soar, In April 1891 the family home was in North Street, Barrow upon Soar. In March 1901 George was residing in the family home at North Street, Barrow upon Soar, together with his father, a lime stone miner, his mother and siblings, Mabel, an elastic trade weaver and Annie, also residing with the family was George’s paternal uncle, George Lockwood, an elastic trade weaver, born 1870 and his wife Sarah Lockwood, an elastic trade weaver, born 1871, the latter were both born in Barrow upon Soar. In April 1911 George was employed as a counterman and was residing in the family home at Sileby Road, Barrow upon Soar together with his father, a quarry man, his mother and siblings, Mabel, a weaver, and Annie a seamer.
George attested into the Army on a Short Service engagement (For the Duration of the War, with the Colours and in the Army Reserve) on the 9th December 1915 in Loughborough. He gave his place of residence as Sileby Road, Barrow upon Soar, Loughborough, his age as 26 years and 11 months and his trade or calling as foreman in cotton room, his present employer being Messrs. H. Seal and Company, Redcross Street, Leicester. He confirmed that he was unmarried. He gave his mother, Louisa Lockwood of Brook House, Sileby Road, Barrow upon Soar as his next of kin. His medical examination recorded that he was 5 foot 8½ inches in height and he had a chest measurement of between 33 and 35½ inches. His record of service began when he joined No. 4 Depot, Royal Garrison Artillery at Great Yarmouth as a Gunner, service number 77645 on mobilisation from the Reserve on the 1/5/16. Posted to 44 Company on the 27/5/16. Posted to the 146th Siege Battery on the 3/6/16. Embarked from Southampton to join the British Expeditionary Force in France on the 16/8/16. Disembarked Havre on the 17/8/16. Admitted to the 2/1st London Field Ambulance suffering from myalgia on the 6/4/17. Transferred to Hospital on the 7/4/17. Posted to the R.G.A. Base on the 19/4/17. Posted to 3rd Army Pool in the field on the 4/5/17. Posted to the 153rd Siege Battery in the field on the 7/5/17. Admitted to the Canadian Casualty Clearing Station suffering from a gunshot wound to the left wrist on the 12-13/8/17. Posted to the Base on the 31/8/17. On Leave to the UK from the 7/11/17 to the 22/11/17. Posted to the 226th Siege Battery on the 29/11/17. Admitted to the 44th Casualty Clearing Station suffering from a gunshot wound to the thigh on the 15/3/18. Admitted to No.8 Stationary Hospital at Wimereaux suffering from as gunshot wound to the left thigh, fractured femur, severe on the 19/3/18. Died of wounds received in action at No.8 Stationary Hospital, Wimereaux on the 29/3/18. George was awarded the British and Victory medals. A parcel received by his mother, dated the 21st July 1918 contained the following of George’s personal possessions, disc, letters, photos, pipe, cross, religious books, razor, upper denture and wallet. The following information was provided by George’s mother Louisa on the 21st May 1919, and was witnessed and signed by T. Stone, Vicar, The Vicarage, Barrow upon Soar on ARMY FORM W. 5080 (Information on deceased soldier’s family) Father of soldier, Henson Lockwood of Sileby Road, Barrow upon Soar. Mother of soldier, Louisa Lockwood, of Sileby Road, Barrow upon Soar. Full blood sisters of soldier, Mabel Lockwood, age 31 of Sileby Road, Barrow upon Soar. Annie Brewin, age 28 of Warner Street, Barrow upon Soar. George’s surviving service documents are in poor condition, and much of the finer detail relating to the period of time that he spent in the army, is either illegible or missing, hence the sparse overall description of his military and personal family history.
On Friday April 12th 1918 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL AND DISTRICT NEWS.” – BARROW ON SOAR. – LOCAL CASUALTIES. – Mr. and Mrs. H. Lockwood, Sileby Road, Barrow on Soar, have been informed that their son, Pte. G. H. Lockwood, R.G.A., died in hospital in France on March 30th, from wounds received in action. Pte. Lockwood was 28 years of age and was a well known football player with Barrow Trinity, and later with Whitwick Imperial. The following have been reported wounded, Second Lieut. Charles Williamson, Royal Warwicks, Corpl. Harry Sutton, Machine Gun Corps, Pte. William Dennis, Leicesters, Pte. William Bott, East Lancashires, and Pte. Samuel Wills, Leicesters.
