He was the son of Frederick Brown an agricultural labourer, born 1864 in Riseley, Beds., and his wife Annie Elizabeth a wool seamer, born 1866 in Willoughby on the Wolds, Notts. Bertie was born in 1896 in Hathern, Leics., his siblings were Ethel Ann, born 1892 in Quorndon, Leics., John H., born 1894 and Eva, born 1899, the latter two siblings were both born in Hathern, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Tanners Lane, Hathern, Leics. In April 1911 Bertie was employed as an errand boy and was residing in the family home at Walton Lane, Barrow upon Soar, Leics., together with his father, now a farm waggoner, his mother and siblings, Ethel and Eva, also residing with the family was his widowed paternal grandfather, Henry Brown, born 1834 in Riseley, Beds.
