ContributeSource: Michael Doyle Their Name Liveth For Evermore: The Great War Roll of Honour for Leicestershire and Rutland. He was the son of the Reverend Clarence Hilton and his wife Mrs Clarence Hilton (nee Shirreff) of Kent, and the husband of Mrs Murray Hilton (nee Watson) of 49, Warwick Gardens, Kensington, London. Much sorrow has been caused in Barrow by the news of the death of Colonel Hilton. He was hit while in the trenches by a grenade, and died unconscious and without suffering half an hour later, on October 21st. He has left a noble example of devotion to duty, having offered his services when long past military age, and we can but trust that his splendid example will be an inspiration for others who follow. He was educated at Rugby, Trinity College, Cambridge, and at Sandhurst. He obtained his first commission in the 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, of which he became Adjutant, and served many years in India. During the Boer War he raised the 4th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, which he commanded until he retired. On the outbreak of the present war he was first employed in the Intelligence Department of the War Office, but preferring active service, he applied for the command of a Battalion, and was appointed to the 7th Battalion East Lancashire Regiment, of which Regiment he was in command when he was killed.
