He was the son of John, a Framework Knitter and his wife Ann Lewin. James was baptised on the 3rd September 1881 at Barrow upon Soar, Leics. James was the first volunteer to enlist on the 29th September 1914 and was the last man to lose his life from Barrow upon Soar.
