He was the son of Arthur Moore, a market gardener, born 1848 in Barwell, Leicestershire and his wife Mary Anne Moore (nee Towers, married on the 19th September 1890 in the Parish Church, Barwell, Leicestershire), born on the 26th December 1865 in Dadlington, Leicestershire. Bertie was born in the 4th quarter of 1895 in Barwell, his siblings were, Lilian Celia, born on the 22nd April 1890 and baptised on the 22nd March 1891 in the Parish Church, Barwell, Adelina Olive, born on the 24th September 1891 and baptised on the 15th November 1891 in the Parish Church, Barwell and Alfred, born in the 3rd quarter of 1893, all his siblings were born in Barwell, in March 1901 the family home was at 27, Chapel Street, Barwell. In April 1901 Bertie was employed as a shoe trade clicker and was residing in the family home at 18, Chapel Street, Barwell, together with his father, a seedsman, his mother and siblings, Lily, a shoe trade machinist, Olive, a shoe trade machinist and Alfred, a shoe trade clicker. Bertie’s older brother Alfred was killed in action on the 7th December 1914.
Bertie enlisted into the Territorial Force on the 9th November 1914 in Hinckley, and was allotted the service number 3160. He gave his place of birth as Barwell, Leicestershire and age as 19 years 1 month. Marital status as single and his trade or calling as shoe hand.
His medical examination recorded that he was 5 feet 8 inches in height, weighed 133 lbs, had a chest measurement of between 32½ and 35 inches, his complexion was described as fair, he had blue eyes and his hair colour was brown, he gave his religion as Wesleyan.
He gave his next of kin as his mother, Mary Anne Moore, The Common, Barwell.

He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Bertie’s surviving service record amounts to a total of thirteen pages, of which only nine pages relate directly to his military service, and these are in fair condition and offer a reasonably accurate overall description of some of the events that took place during his period of service.
The War Diary records: 1 Aug-15 – MAPLE COPSE. 9.30pm. Battalion commenced work on new communication trench from MAPLE COPSE to ZILLEBEKE. Worked till 2.00am.
The War Diary records: 2 Aug-15 – MAPLE COPSE. Work continued on communication trench. Casualties during the day in MAPLE COPSE 35 wounded.
On Saturday, August, 28th, 1915 The Leicester Daily Post published the following article under the heading. “LEICESTERSHIRE AND THE WAR.” – LOCAL CASUALTIES. – The death from wounds of Pte. B. MOORE, of the 5th Battalion (T.F.) Leicestershire Regiment, is officially reported from the Base under date 11th August.
