He was the son of William John Moore, a shoe trade finisher, born in the January quarter of 1869 in Glascote, Warwickshire (son of William Moore, 1843-1899 and Appelina Abbott, 1843-1896) and his wife Maria Moore (nee Goode, married in the July quarter of 1889 in the Hinckley, Leicestershire district), born on the 16th September 1870 in Barwell, Leicestershire and baptised on the 13th April 1873 in St. Mary’s Church, Barwell (daughter of Joseph Goode and Harriet Edwards). Joseph William, was born in the October quarter of 1897 in Barwell, his siblings were, Harriet, born in the July quarter of 1890 and baptised on the 30th August 1891 in St. Mary’s Church, Barwell, Beatrice Ellen, born in the April quarter of 1892 and baptised on the 11th December 1892 in St. Mary’s Church, Barwell and Ada Annie, born on the 28th June 1895 and baptised on the 31st May 1896 in St. Mary’s Church, Barwell, all his siblings were born in Barwell, in March 1901 the family home was at Mill Street, Barwell. In April 1911 Joseph was employed as a hosiery trade worker and was residing in the family home at 34, Mill Street, Barwell, together with his father, a shoe trade worker, his mother, a boot trade machinist and his siblings, Harriet, a boot trade machinist, Beatrice (Nelly), a boot trade machinist, Ada, a hosiery trade worker, Arthur, a schoolboy, born on the 11th July 1902, Doris, a schoolgirl, born in the October quarter of 1904 and baptised on the 9th February 1905 in St. Mary’s Church, Barwell and Thomas Albert, a schoolboy, born on the 21st December 1907, the latter three siblings were all born in Barwell, also residing with the family was an adopted child, Ada Grewcock, a schoolgirl, born in the April quarter of 1909 in Barwell and baptised on the 30th June 1909 in St. Mary’s Church, Barwell (daughter of Arthur Grewcock and Agnes Williamson).

Awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
In the event of his death, Joseph nominated his father, John as his sole legatee.
On the 11th December 1917, Joseph’s mother Maria, was awarded a weekly Army Pension of four shillings, to commence on the 25th December 1917. On the 29th of January 1919 the award was increased to five shillings, and back dated to the 6th November 1918.
On Saturday June 30th 1917, The Leicester Mail published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL CASUALTIES.” – HINCKLEY DISTRICT CASUALTIES. Mr. and Mrs. Moore, Mill Street, Barwell, are notified that their son, Private J. Moore, was killed on June 7th.
