ContributeSource: Michael Doyle Their Name Liveth For Evermore: The Great War Roll of Honour for Leicestershire and Rutland. He was the son of Mr and Mrs John Webb. He was a man who had considerable military experience before the war having enlisted in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps. in 1906, and after serving his first twelve months in England embarked for Malta where he was transferred to the 1st Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment and embarked with his new regiment for Egypt. While there he was promoted to Corporal. He returned with his regiment to England in November 1914, and embarked for France in January 1915. He had only been there for three weeks when he was invalided home with frost bite. He remained in England until the following July, and was promoted to Sergeant and transferred to the 8th Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment. He was home on leave in February 1916, returning to France he was killed later in the same year by a shell splinter while waiting to go forward with his men some two miles from Fricourt, France. He was spoken of by a comrade as being “ a fine soldier, who always set a good example to his men.” Other sources show his Christian name as Abram.
