He was the son of Francis Burdett an agricultural labourer, born 1861 in Bisbrooke, Rutland and his wife Caroline Ruth, born 1860 in Seaton, Rutland. Francis Henry was born in 1893 in Bisbrooke, Rutland, his siblings were, Emily Daisy, born 1890, Rose Marion, born 1892, John Thomas, born 1897 and Annie Elizabeth, born 1900, all his siblings were born in Bisbrooke, Rutland, in March 1901 the family home was at Bisbrooke, Rutland. In April 1911 Francis was employed as a laboratory boy and was residing in the family home at Bisbrooke, Rutland, together with his parents and siblings, Rose, and John. Completed latrines in rear of trench 106 and 107, sandbag revetting bays 1 and 6 trench 108, traversed bays 4 and 5 trench 105, sandbagged revetting bay 5 trench 105, -?- and -?- -?- communication trench 108 and trench behind 108. Battalion sentry post completed in trench 102 and in trench 103B. All sump pits cleared and drained. Trench gratings lifted and sump pits cleared and underneath. Brick rubble put in -?- of -?- -?-. Strengthening wire in front of trench 93, building new machine gun emplacement and raising fire platform under instructions of ROYAL ENGINEERS. Strengthening parapet and parados with sandbags bay 4 93 and bay 3 94. Commenced covering bomb proofs with brick rubble, building parapet of sandbags at end of trench 95 against stray bullets. Bays 31 92 cleared with and prepared for sandbagging. -?- a casualty -?- continued and sand bags filled, repairs to parapets in bays 8, 17, 18, 20, 21 and 23 in 92 continued. Sandbagging bay 5 -?- in the completed. Broken brick placed on top of bomb proof shelters. All sump pits cleared and drains made. Covering party sent out in front of trench 93, whilst party were working on wire entanglements nothing to report. Enemy very quiet all day with exception of artillery duel on front line trenches. 1 man killed by looking over parapet in day light. Relieved by 6th LEICESTERSHIRE REGT in the trenches at 7.15pm. “D” Company and HQ. remained in BEILES for the night, the remainder marched to HUMBERCAMPS and took over billets vacated by 6th LEICESTERSHIRE REGT.
