He was the son of William Clark an agricultural labourer, born 1849 in Blaby, Leics., and his wife Margaret, born 1851 in Blaby, Leics. Hubert was born in 1890 in Blaby, Leics., his siblings were, Richard, born 1874, James, born 1880, Ellen, born 1883 and William, born 1884, all his siblings were born in Blaby, Leics., in April 1891 the family home was at Wigston Street, Blaby, Leics. In March 1901 Hubert was residing in the family home at Wigston Road, Blaby, Leics., together with his father, now a brickyard labourer, his mother and siblings, Julia A., born 1876 in Blaby, Leics., Ellen and William. In April 1911 Hubert was employed as a wood sawyer and was residing in the family home at Paradise Row, Blaby, Leics., together with his father, now a labourer, his mother and niece, Doris Irene Clark, born 1903 in Blaby, Leics. Hubert enlisted in the 4th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment on the 27th March 1912 in South Wigston, Leicestershire, he gave his trade or calling as sawyer and his place of residence as Paradise Row, Blaby, Leicestershire. Information taken at the time of his medical examination records his apparent age as 21 years and 210 days, his height as 5 foot 7 ½ inches, his chest measurement as 32 to 34 inches, and his physical development as good. The following details are taken from his service record; Home service 27/3/12 to 1/3/15. Embarked 2/3/15 and disembarked at Le Havre France to join the B.E.F. Admitted 46th D.R.S. suffering from a boil 2/9/15. Discharged to duty in the field 12/9/15. Missing in action in the field 13/10/15. Death accepted for official purposes 13/10/15. Total service 3 years 201 days. The following information was provided on the 24th October 1919 by Hubert’s mother Margaret, and witnessed by F. H. Joscelyne, Clerk in Holy Orders, in Blaby Rectory, Leicestershire on ARMY FORM W. 5080 (Information on deceased soldier’s family). Father of soldier William Clark, mother of soldier, Margaret Clark, both of Paradise Row, Blaby, Leicestershire. Full blood brothers of soldier, William Clark, age 34 of Welford Road, Blaby, Leicestershire and Richard C. Clark, age 45 of Leicester Road, Countesthorpe, Leicestershire. Full blood sisters of soldier, Julia A. Moore, age 43 of Willoughby Road, Blaby, Leicestershire and Ellen Hallam, age 35 of Sycamore Street, Blaby, Leicestershire. The War Diary for today records. At noon our artillery started to bombard. At 1.00pm our smoke and gas started. At 1.50pm smoke and gas stopped. At 2.00pm artillery lifted and Battn assaulted the HOHENZOLLERN REDOUBT. Lt Col R. E. MARTIN was wounded early but remained in the fire trench directing operations for nearly 24 hours and until -?- to the dressing station by Brig Gen KEMP. All officers of the Battn either killed or wounded. The War Diary entry for the following day the 14th October records. In the evening the Battn was relieved by part of the 139th Bde and went back to the LANCASHIRE TRENCH. Roll call revealed that 188 NCO’s and men returned. The Official History of the War – Military Operations (France and Belgium 1915 Volume II) provided the following statistics for the 1st/4th Battn Leicestershire Regiment, officers killed 20, other ranks killed 453. Total losses for the day were 138th Bde 64 officers and 1,476 other ranks. 137th Bde 68 officers and 1,478 other ranks.
