He was the son of Ernest Charles Goode, a shoe trade finisher, born 1875 in Blaby, Leicestershire and his wife Mary Goode (nee Barnett, married in the 4th quarter of 1895 in the Blaby, Leicestershire district), a Griswold knitter born 1878 in Prestwold, Leicestershire. John Leslie was born in the 1st quarter of 1896 in Blaby, in March 1901 the family home was at Whetstone Road, Blaby. In April 1911 John was residing in the family home at New Street, Blaby, together with his father a shoe trade finisher, his mother and siblings, Harry, born 1902, Gwenyth, born 1905 and Florence, born 1909, all his siblings were born in Blaby.
