Horace Stanley was born on 29 August 1921 in the village of Woodville, South Derbyshire, near the famous brewing town of Burton- on - Trent. He had one sister called Hilda who was born in June 1920 and who still lives near Woodville in the village of Hartshorne.
As a young man Horace worked at the Albion Clay Company in Woodville but left there to join the Royal Navy in 1941 for a new career.
Writing home in January 1942, he wrote:
" I shall be across for a drink of good old Burton ale as soon as I get home. We can get beer out here at 7d a bottle and some of them seem to think it's good stuff. But wherever you go you can't get any to touch Burton, it's the best in the world."
