He was the son of Thomas Martin, a feeder of hounds, born 1844 in Billesdon, Leicestershire and his wife Selina Ann Martin (nee Phipps, married in the 3rd quarter of 1870 in the Blaby, Leicestershire district), born 1843 in Whetstone, Leicestershire. Herbert Phipps, a schoolboy was born in the 3rd quarter of 1884 in Medbourne, Leicestershire he had one sibling, a brother William, a kennel labourer, born 1874 in Skeffington, Leicestershire, in April 1891 the family home was at Hall Lane, Medbourne. In March 1901 Herbert was employed as a farm labourer and was residing in the family home at Hall Lane, Medbourne, together with his father, a kennel man and feeder of hounds and his mother. In April 1911 Herbert was employed as a domestic groom and was residing at the Stable Yard, Blaston Hall, Blaston, Leicestershire. In the 4th quarter of 1916, in the Uppingham, Rutland district, Herbert married Grace Marlow. Since his capture in March 1918, Herbert had been held as a Prisoner of War in Kassel Prison Camp, Hesse, Germany, where he died in the camp hospital on the 17th May 1918. He was awarded the British and Victory medals. He is commemorated on his parent’s headstone in the churchyard of St. Giles’s Church, Medbourne.
