He was the son of William John Barrand a cottager, born 1847 in Great Gonerby, Lincolnshire and his wife Betsy Barrand (nee Watson, married on the 16th February 1880 in Spittlegate, Grantham, Lincolnshire), born 1860 in Londonthorpe, Lincolnshire. Cyril was born in the 1st quarter of 1889 in Bottesford, Leicestershire, his siblings were Ernest, born 1882, Walter, born 1884, Lily, born 1887, Fred, born 1892 and Leonard, born 1894, all his siblings were born in Bottesford, in April 1891 the family home was at 8, Rutland Arms Road, Bottesford, Leicestershire. On the 1st September 1895 in the Grantham, Lincolnshire district, Cyril’s father died aged 49. In the 4th quarter of 1897 in the Grantham, Lincolnshire district, Cyril’s widowed mother married William Edwards. In March 1901 Cyril was a schoolboy and was residing in the family home at 2, High Street, Bottesford, together with his mother and step father William Edwards, born 1845 in Bottesford, together with his siblings Lily, Fred and Leonard and his half blood siblings William Edwards, born 1898 and Ada Edwards, born 1900, the latter two half blood siblings were both born in Bottesford. In April 1911 Cyril was employed as a butcher’s assistant and was residing in the family home at 6, High Street, Bottesford, together with his widowed mother, a charwoman and siblings Fred and Leonard and half blood siblings William and Ada. Cyril first entered the theatre of war in France on the 4th May 1915, he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory medals.
The War Diary records: 19 Aug-16 -The Battalion were relieved by the 2nd Battalion SHERWOOD FORESTERS and marched to camp at MAILLY-MAILLET WOOD.

On Friday September 8th 1916 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “DISTRICT WAR ITEMS.” – BOTTESFORD SOLDIER WOUNDED. Mrs. Edwards, High-st., Bottesford has been notified that her son, Pte. Cyril Barrand, Leicestershire Regiment, has been reported wounded. In a letter to Mrs. Edwards, his officer stated that a shell severed the lower part of Pte. Barrand’s left leg. They would all miss him very much as he was a very stout hearted fellow, and could be thoroughly relied on to carry out any duty given to him.
On Friday September 22nd 1916 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “DISTRICT WAR ITEMS.” – BOTTESFORD SOLDIER’S DEATH. Mr. Barrand of Bottesford has received an official notification that his son, Pte. C. Barrand, of the Leicesters, has died of wounds.
