He was the son of Thomas Scarborough, a stone quarryman, born 1878 in Whitton Common, Derbyshire and his wife Miriam Scarborough (nee Clarke, married in the 1st quarter of 1898 in the Hinckley, Leics. district), a hosiery trade Griswold knitter, born 1880 in Sapcote, Leics. Charles Eric was born on the 17th May 1898 in Sharnford, Leics., he had one sibling, a brother, George Reuben, born 1901 in Sharnford, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Sharnford, Leics. In April 1911 Charles was a schoolboy and was residing in the family home at Church Street, Sapcote, Leics., together with his father a stone quarryman, his mother and siblings, Reuben, a schoolboy and Thomas, born 1908 in Sapcote, Leics. The family later resided at Garden Cottages, Primethorpe, Leics., and then at The Vinery, Cosby, Leics. The background relating to the circumstances in which Charles lost his life are as follows; On the 20th July 1917 SS. Beatrice was en route from Penarth to Honfleur carrying a cargo of coal, when she was attacked by a torpedo fired by German submarine, UC-47 at position 49? 57’North, 04? 57’ West, approximately 10 nautical miles East by South of The Lizard, she sank with the loss of 11 lives.
