He was the son of Amos Blockley a quarryman blocker, born 1869 in Sutton in the Elms, Leics., and his wife Mary Elizabeth, a Griswold knitter, born 1872 in Cosby, Leics. Harry was born in 1893 in Primethorpe, Leics., his siblings were Annie Mary, born 1889, Arthur, born 1892, Herbert, born 1896, Ernest, born 1898 and Evelyn, born 1901, all his siblings were born in Primethorpe, Leics. In March 1901 the family home was at Main Road, Broughton Astley, Primethorpe, Leics., in the Ecclesiastical Parish of St. Mary. In April 1911 Harry was employed as a hosiery worker and was residing in the family home at Sutton in the Elms, Broughton Astley, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Annie, Arthur, Herbert, Ernest, Evelyn, Violet, born 1904, Lilian, born 1906, Mildred, born 1907, Sidney, born 1910 and an unnamed female baby, born 1911, the latter five siblings were all born in Broughton Astley, Leics. His elder brother Arthur also fell. The War Diary entry for the 6th August 1916 records. TRENCHES, ARRAS. At 12.04pm the enemy suddenly opened an intense bombardment for 15 minutes, but made no attempt to enter our trenches. The trenches were badly damaged, casualties were very slight. Other ranks, 1 killed and 2 wounded. It is reported that the enemy attempted a raid on our left which failed.
