He was the son of John W. and Elizabeth Day of Caldecott, Rutland. Other sources show his place of residence as Uppingham, Rutland. Prior to his enlistment he had been an ironstone worker, initially he joined the 9th battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment and was posted abroad on the 26th July 1915. He fought in France and Belgium and early in 1917 he was transferred to the 6th Battalion, being killed on the 10th April of that year by a shell during the advance south east of Arras. He was buried at a point north of Croiselles. The War Diary for today records. Dispositions as April 10th. 28 casualties reported from the 8th April to the 11th April 1917.
