He was the son of Henry Buck a farmer, born 1857 in Melbourne, Derbys., and his wife Eliza, born 1859 in Melbourne, Derbys. Joseph was born in 1892 in Chellaston, Derbys., his siblings were John, born 1879 and Sarah A., born 1880, the latter two siblings were both born in Melbourne, Derbys., Alice, born 1887, Henry, born 1884 and Louisa, born 1890, the latter three siblings were all born in Castle Donington, Leics., and Frank, born 1895 in Chellaston, Derbys., in March 1901 the family home was at Brooklet Farm, Castle Donington, Leics. In April 1911 Joseph was employed working on the family farm and was residing in the family home at High Street, Castle Donington, Leics., together with his father, now a farmer and market gardener, his mother and siblings, Frank and Alice.
