He was the son of Edward Clayton a grinder, born 1849 in Barlow, Derbys., and his wife Mary Ann, born 1853 in Castle Donington, Leics. George was born in 1888 in Castle Donington, Leics., his siblings were, Rose, born 1877 and Emma Mary, born 1891, both his siblings were born in Castle Donington, Leics., in April 1891 the family home was at Barroon, Castle Donington, Leics. In March 1901 George was a scholar and was residing at the Ardwick Green Industrial School, 75 & 77, Ardwick Green, Manchester, Lancs. In April 1911 George was employed as a brewery labourer and was residing as a boarder at 69, Oxford Street, Salford, Lancs.
