He was the son of James Cliff a domestic gardener, born 1867 in Castle Donington, Leics., and his wife Charlotte, born 1870 in Castle Donington, Leics. Arthur was born in 1895 in Castle Donington, Leics., his siblings were, Mary Emma, born 1894, John, born 1898, Elsie, born 1899 and Sarah, born 1901, all his siblings were born in Castle Donington, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Barroon, Castle Donington, Leics. In April 1911 Arthur was employed as a factory errand boy and was residing in the family home at St. Ann’s Lane, Castle Donington, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Mary, John, Elsie, Sarah, Hilda, born 1904, Lizzie, born 1907 and Rose, born 1909, the latter three siblings were all born in Castle Donington, Leics.
