The War Diary for today records. TRENCHES. At 8.30am 50. and A1. bombarded by universal shells. At 1.55pm eight heavy trench mortars fired into 50. Replied with Field Guns and Howitzers and three 50 pound trench mortars. Between 3.00 and 4.30pm enemy bombarded 50.S. A3. A2. and HQ’s with 6 inch shells. No casualties but much damage. At 9.35pm enemy -?- -?- our sap head in A2. right. 3 tunnellers killed. Attempts at rescue prevented by gas.
