He was the son of Joseph and Bertha M. Leeland of Spittal Street, Castle Donington, Leics. His enlistment documents record that he gave his father, Joseph Leeland of Castle Donington, Leicestershire, England as his next of kin, he gave his trade or calling as Steel Worker and stated that he was unmarried. He also stated that he served with the Active Militia, the 4th Field Company, Canadian Engineers. Information taken from his medical examination shows that he was 5 foot 7 inches in height and had a chest measurement of 34 to 38 inches. His complexion was described as medium with brown eyes and dark brown hair. He gave his religion as Church of England. His record of service gives the following information. Transferred on the SS Metagam on 6th December 1918. Joined the strength of the 5th Pioneer Battalion. Transferred as Sapper to England 2nd September 1917. Transferred to 13th Field Company February 1918. Proceeded to France 16th March 1918. Transferred to Canadian Engineers 3rd July 1918. He had no record of injuries or illness until his death, the circumstances being that he was killed by an enemy shell while in the field.
