He was the son of James Jarvis, a shepherd, born 1857 in Moulton, Lincolnshire and his wife Elizabeth Jarvis, born 1873 in Ketton, Rutland. Charles Caudley was born in the 1st quarter of 1894 in Ketton, his siblings were, John Amos, an agricultural labourer, born 1886 in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, Gertrude, born 1892 in Ketton, George, born 1897, in Tickencote, Rutland, Mabel, born 1899 and Flora, born 1901, the latter two siblings were both born in Pickworth, Rutland, in March 1901 the family home was at Pickworth, Rutland. In April 1911 Charles was absent from the family home at Pickworth, Rutland, residing there was his father, a shepherd, his mother and siblings, George, a farm labourer, Mabel, a schoolgirl, Elsie, a schoolgirl, born 1902, William, a schoolboy, born 1903 and Dorothy, born 1907, the latter three siblings were all born in Pickworth. His father later resided at Castle Bytham, Lincolnshire. Charles was a platelayer on the railway before enlistment. He embarked for Gallipoli in June 1915, and it was on the Peninsular that he met his death. Charles attested into the Royal Naval Division on the 29th August 1914, and was allocated the service number 12700. He gave his year and place of birth as 1894 in Ketton, Rutland. He gave his home address as Clifton, New Road, Oakham, Rutland, and his trade or calling as platelayer. His medical examination recorded that he was 5 foot 7 inches in height, and he had a chest measurement of between 33 and 35 inches. His complexion was described as fair, his hair colour was brown and his eyes were blue. He gave his religion as Church of England. He nominated his father Mr. J. Jarvis of Clifton, New Road, Oakham, Rutland as his next of kin. On his card of enlistment against the date entry is recorded Y & L.R. This is an abbreviation for the York and Lancaster Regiment, and Charles was shown to be serving with the 5th Battalion Connaught Rangers when he was killed in action in Gallipoli, and not a Battalion of the Royal Naval Division. (The information relating to the military background is not fully and conclusively corroborated by any clear and corresponding factual comparisons that are presently available, therefore what is recorded may not relate to this casualty.
