FORMER COALVILLE MAN ACCIDENTALLY KILLED

News has been received that Private John William Pickering, son of Mr Joseph Pickering, of Ashby Road, Coalville, has been accidentally killed in France through the premature explosion of a hand grenade he was carrying, a sergeant being killed by the same explosion and three privates wounded.

The deceased soldier formerly worked at the Snibston Colliery and went from there to the Stockingford Pit. He subsequently joined the Warwickshire County Constabulary and was a policeman stationed at Bedworth when the war broke out. He joined the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He was 22 years of age and his brother, Mr Jos. Pickering, is the gate-keeper at the Snibston Crossing, Belvoir Road.
