Albert was the son of William and Annie Chapman, of Coalville.

Albert was a Driver in the Royal Army Service Corps and the Royal Artillery- he apparently received his training en route to Singapore.

He was taken prisoner by the Japanese and held at Sarawak 5 POW camp and is believed to have died of dysentery shortly before the end of the war. He is buried in the Labuan War Cemetery, Malaysia and is remembered on the headstone of his parents, in Hugglescote cemetery.
