Herbert Knifton was born on the 2nd September 1919 in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire to John and Martha Knifton (née Elkin). He was the youngest of four children, his oldest brother Albert also served during the Second World War in the Royal Air Force, he returned home from the war. Herbert married Mary Stockley, a munitions worker, on the 15th April 1944. He was a Private in the Seaforth Highlanders (7th Bn.) and his service number was 4860537. He served in the Second World War in the British Army. He was killed in action on the 15th February 1945 in Reichswald, Germany, most likely whilst serving during Operation Veritable or The Battle of the Reichswald. He is buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery (44. G. 4.) Please see attached a photo of Herbert in uniform.
