He was the son of Zadok Charlton a kerb dresser, born 1856 in Enderby, Leics., and his wife Mary Elizabeth, born 1856 in Cosby, Leics. Ernest was born in 1890 in Littlethorpe, Leics., his siblings were, John Joseph, born 1878, Elizabeth Lilian, born 1883 and Margaret M., born 1886, the latter three siblings were all born in Enderby, Leics., Zadok, born 1888 in Croft, Leics., in April 1891 the family home was at Littlethorpe Street, Cosby, Leics. In March 1901 Ernest was residing in the family home at Littlethorpe Lane, Cosby, Leics., together with his father now a quarry worker, his mother and siblings, Joseph, Elizabeth, Margaret and Zadok. In April 1911 Ernest was employed as a cycle maker and was residing in the family home at Cosby, Leics., together with his father, now a farmer, his mother and siblings, Elizabeth and Zadok, also residing with the family was his nephew, Arthur Cyril Charlton Beavan, born 1905 in Narborough, Leics.
