He was the son of Henry William Mallett, and his wife, Emma Mallett (nee Pole, married 1893), a Griswold knitter, born 1867 in Narborough, Leics., who was the daughter of Frederick and Ann Pole of the Blacksmith’s Arms, Kendall Lane, Cosby, Leics. Frederick William James was born in 1898 in Cosby, Leics., his siblings were, Elizabeth E., born 1894 and Annie C., born 1895, both his siblings were born in Cosby, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Hardy’s Yard, Cosby, Leics. In April 1911 Frederick was employed as a farm wagoner and was residing in the family home at Cosby, Leics., together with his mother, and siblings, Elizabeth, a boot and shoe trade machinist, Annie, a boot and shoe trade machinist, Ethel, born 1906 and Walter, born 1908, the latter two siblings were both born in Cosby, Leics. Frederick enlisted into the Leicestershire Regiment on the 2nd February 1917, embarking on the 24th April to join the British Expeditionary Force in France. He arrived in Calais, on the 26th April, and was first transferred to the 5th (Reserve) Battalion of the North Staffordshire Regt, before being posted to the 1st Battalion of the same regiment, where he joined them in the field. He was wounded on the 5th June and died on the 11th June in the 2nd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station from shrapnel wounds to his elbow and left side.
