He was the son of Joseph Merry, a hosiery trimmer, born 1854 in Leicester, and the late Sarah A. Merry (nee Burdett, married 1884), born 1858 in Leicester, who died in the 3rd quarter of 1900 aged 43. Thomas was born in 1892 in Leicester, his siblings were, Annie, a button sorter, born 1882, Joseph, a shoe trade clicker, born 1884 and Jessie, born 1897, all his siblings were born in Leicester, in March 1901 the family home was at 40, Royal East Street, Leicester. Thomas’ father died in the 2nd quarter of 1907, aged 53.
