He was the son of Isaac Jarratt, a framework knitter, born 1858 in Countesthorpe, Leicestershire and Mary Jarrett (nee Starmer, married in the 4th quarter of 1884 in the Leicester district), born 1855 in Cosby, Leicestershire, in March 1901 Henry was absent from the family home at Peatling End, Countesthorpe, residing there were his siblings, Annie Rebecca, a hosiery knitting machine operator, born 1886, Dinah Elizabeth M., a hosiery knitting machine operator, born 1887 and Eveline, born 1892, all his siblings were born in Leicester, Henry William Emmanuel was born in the 2nd quarter of 1889 in St. John’s, Leicester, and was residing at Church Lane, Countesthorpe, this being the family home of his widowed paternal uncle, William E. Jarratt, a framework knitter, born 1845 in Countesthorpe. In April 1911 Henry was absent from the family home at Peatling Road, Countesthorpe, residing there was his widowed mother and siblings, Annie, a hosiery trade worker, Lizzie, a hosiery trade linker, and Eveline, a tailoress.
Henry attested into the 3rd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment (Militia) to serve an engagement of 6 years on the 28th April 1906 in Leicester. He gave his place of birth as St. John’s, Leicester his age as 18 years and 11 months and his trade or calling as hosiery hand. He gave his present employer as Mr. Tompkin, Hosiery, Countesthorpe, Leicestershire. He gave his present home address as Peatling Road, Countesthorpe, Leicestershire. He confirmed that he was unmarried. He gave his father, Isaac, mother Mary, sister’s Ann Rebecca, Elizabeth and Emily, all of Peatling Road, Countesthorpe, Leicestershire as his next of kin. His medical examination recorded that he was 5 foot 6¼ inches in height, weighed 130 pounds and he had a chest measurement of between 34 and 36 inches. His complexion was described as fresh, his hair colour was brown and he had brown eyes. It was noted that he had a scar on the upper half of his right eyebrow and small mole in front of his left arm pit. He gave his religion as Church of England. He was pronounced fit for Militia service on the 28th April 1906 in Leicester. His record of service began when he joined the Depot of the Leicestershire Regiment as a Private, service number 9451 on the 28/4/06. Posted to the 3rd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment – Militia and commenced 76 days drill on the 28/4/06. Enlisted into the Regular Army (Coldstream Guards) on the 7/11/06.
The War Diary records: 4 Feb-15 - No.1 and 2 in firing trenches. No.3 in supporting trench and No.4 in billet in reserve. Casualties 2 other ranks killed. 2 other ranks wounded. Companies changed at dusk. No.3 and 4 in firing trenches. No.2 in supporting trench and No.1 in reserve billet.
On Saturday March 13th 1915 The Leicester Chronicle and Leicestershire Mercury published the following article under the heading. “BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS.” – DEATHS. JARRATT. – On February 4th, at Cuinchy, near La Bassee, 7011 Lance-Sergt. Harry Jarratt, 2nd Coldstream Guards, only son of the late Isaac and of Mrs. Jarratt, Church Street, Countesthorpe. Killed in action.
