ContributeSource: Michael Doyle Their Name Liveth For Evermore: The Great War Roll of Honour for Leicestershire and Rutland. In April 1911 Richard Girdler, was a well boring engineer, having been born 1884 in Brixton, Surrey, he was residing in the family home at 1, High Street Yard, Bodorgan, Anglesey, Wales, together with his wife Rose Girdler, born 16th September 1884 in Croft, Leicestershire.
Aubrey married Rose Duncan in the 2nd quarter of 1909 in the Blaby, Leicestershire district. They had two children, Elsie M., born 16th September 1912 in Bangor, Caernarvonshire, Wales and Aubrey James, born 5th September 1915 in Croft, Leicestershire and who was baptised on the 26th September 1915 in Croft Parish Church. Aubrey’s widow married George H. Roberts, in the 1st quarter of 1923 in the Blaby, Leicestershire district, George was born on the 25th October 1893. In 1939 Aubrey’s remarried widow was residing in the family home at 5, Kendall’s Avenue, Croft, together with her husband George, a road stone quarry worker, their son Gordon R. Roberts, a road stone works office clerk, born 9th May 1923 and Aubrey’s daughter Elsie M. Girdler, a hosiery trade mender.
Aubrey James is at present untraceable through either the registers of birth, or the census returns for April 1891 and March 1901. His military service records also did not survive, thus no information can be obtained from that source. All that is known for certain is that in the April 1911 census return he recorded his Christian name as Richard. The only other conclusive information discovered to date, are the details of his marriage and the births of his two children. The only military documents that are available show that he nominated his wife Rose, as his sole legatee in the event of his death, and that he was awarded the British War and Victory medals.
