He was the son of James Preston, a quarry stone cutter, born 29th November 1859 in Markfield, Leicestershire and his wife Clara Preston (nee Broadhurst, married on the 1st December 1888 in Thurcaston Parish Church), born 29th June 1866 in Kirby Muxloe, Leicestershire. George Adcock was born in the 4th quarter of 1889 in Croft, Leicestershire and was baptised on the 25th December 1889 in Croft Parish Church, in April 1891 he was residing in the family home at New Row, Croft. In March 1901 George was residing in the family home at 11, Granite Cos Cottages, Croft, together with his father, a quarry powder man, his mother and siblings, Frank, born 22nd August 1892 and baptised on the 23rd October 1892 in Croft Parish Church, Harold Denis, born 17th April 1896 and baptised on the 2nd August 1896 in Croft Parish Church and Dorothy Agnes, born 14th July 1900 and baptised on the 19th August 1900 in Croft Parish Church, all his siblings were born in Croft, also residing in the family home was George’s widowed Uncle, William Edward Holbeach, a granite quarry horse drive, born 1872 in Enderby, Leicestershire and his daughter Christiana Agnes Holbeach, born 1895 in Leicester. In April 1911 George was employed as a concrete maker and was residing in the family home at 11, Orchard Street, Croft, together with his father, a quarry worker, his mother and siblings, Frank, a blacksmiths striker, Harold, a gardener, Dorothy, a schoolgirl, Lois, a schoolgirl, born 21st November 1901 and baptised on the 16th February 1902 in Croft Parish Church and Clara, a schoolgirl, born 3rd August 1903 and baptised on the 20th September 1903 in Croft Parish Church, the latter two siblings were both born in Croft. George’s father had previously married Sarah Jane Goadby on the 24th December 1883 in Newtown Linford, Leicestershire Parish Church, Sarah was born in 1864 in Newtown Linford, she died aged 22 in the 1st quarter of 1887 in the Market Bosworth, Leicestershire district. In 1939 George’s father, a retired quarry labourer, his mother and sisters, Dorothy, a concrete works telephone operator and Clara were all residing in the family home at 8, The Green, Dovecote Road, Croft.
No Military Service details are available for George, there appears to be no evidence that he served overseas, or that his death was connected to war related injuries.
